A charming antique red velvet presentation box signed for Skinner & Co., Diamond Merchants, Orchard Street, London, W. Dressed in deep crimson velvet with a cream satin-lined lid and a fitted interior, it bears the retailer’s gilt crest for an elegant finishing touch. The Orchard Street address dates this example to before the firm’s 1922 move to Old Bond Street, and Skinner & Co. later merged in 1997 to become Bentley & Skinner.

Item Details

ERA: Late Victorian to Edwardian, c.1890–1922.

MEASUREMENTS: Box is 89mm long x 38mm wide x 22mm deep.
WEIGHT: 25g.

MATERIALS: Velvet exterior, satin lid lining, velvet interior pad; base metal catch and hinge.

STAMPS: Signed “Skinner & Co., Diamond Merchants, Orchard Street, London, W”.

HALLMARKS: Since we have dated this piece as being made before 1950, a hallmark is not required in order for it to be sold in line with UK hallmarking legislation.

PACKAGING: Your order will be gift-wrapped free of charge in a Lillicoco cardboard box made from recycled materials, tied with a ribbon.

Condition

VERY GOOD: Age-appropriate wear to the velvet with some rubbing and pile compression; the satin lining shows light creasing and gentle age toning. Minor tarnish to the metal fittings. Presentable and well-kept overall, with wear commensurate with age.
