The saint is caught mid-strike. The horse rears, the dragon coils beneath in enamelled turquoise and acid green, and the whole scene hangs from a swag of pearls like a jewel lifted straight out of the sixteenth century.

After 1867, when the Compromise made Austria-Hungary a dual monarchy, its goldsmiths revived the painted-enamel jewels of the Renaissance: silver worked in high relief, flooded with opaque colour, hung with pearls and set with cabochon stones. St George earned his place in that repertoire as patron of soldiers and travellers. It's the figure you wear when you're going somewhere uncertain.

Deep cobalt across the saint's surcoat, emerald and burnt orange on the caparison, the dragon's scales shading blue to yellow. A cabochon Emerald at the saddle, a Ruby in the dragon's flank. Graduating Pearls frame the scene and a single Pearl drop sways below

Exquisite detail through the horse's mane, the plume on the helm, and each scale along the dragon's tail.
